Our story
Twenty years of life by the sea in Amed
“One of the most beautiful and unspoilt areas on the island.”
How it all began
After many years of coming to this beautiful corner of Bali (the first visit was in 1996), we opened Life in Amed in 2004, back when the coast road was rocky and there was no electricity, phone line or internet. Even today, coming to Amed feels like stepping back in time compared with the bustle of Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu or central Ubud.
Our grounds were once sandy soil full of crab holes. They have become a vibrant garden of scented sandat and gardenia bushes, frangipani (jepun) and cempaka trees, whose flowers we now use for our daily offerings.
The hotel was built on flat land right by the beach, in a blend of traditional Balinese and modern design: carved doors, antique furniture, natural-stone bathrooms open to the sky, and a garden that smells of flowers day and night.
Our village
Lean is a working fishing village. Every morning the jukung boats come in with the catch; most afternoons, children play on the beach and may bring you shells. We are proud to be part of this community: our team comes from the village, and our free kids’ yoga class and donation classes give something back.
